Last Wednesday, I woke up…without a voice.
The thing about being without a voice is it makes you more aware of what and who you are listening to. It also challenged me to think about the things I would use my voice for once it returned.
See friends, you and I often go through our day looking for blessings or answers to our latest and greatest prayers and in the midst can find ourselves blinded to the incredible gifts in our present. We become focused on what we don’t have that we negate what we DO have.
I don’t know where you are today or what you are facing. What I do know is that YOU ARE AMAZING and YOU ARE LOVED. What I do know is that you have far more to give than you think and within you is the ability to make a meaningful difference in this world just by sharing who you are. Our invitation each day regardless if we find ourselves voiceless, blind, or facing an uphill climb, is to be fully alive right where we are. Life wasn’t meant to be easy, it’s meant to be fulfilling.
Sight-What do you see every day? As one of my mentors Christine Caine reminds us, “What you see will lead to what you think about. So much is determined by what we see and what we look at.”
Sound-What do you spend your days listening to? Are you engaged in gossip or good news? Are you listening to words (via talks, conversations, the news) that encourage you or leave you feeling dejected? Just like a radio, if what your listening to doesn’t lift you up, perhaps it is time to tune into another station…or turn it off. As the song says, “Silence is Golden.”
Smell-My challenge to each one of us is this: get rid of things that stink.
Touch-What are you allowing to touch you (physically and metaphorically) and how are you touching others? Is your presence inspiring, elevating, and encouraging others?
“Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.”-Charles Dickens
Taste-We were all created to be taste-testers.
Be my ears in a world that just wants to be heard.
Be my eyes in a world desperate for vision, where people long to be seen.
Be my hands and feet in a world in need of love, affection, and someone to stand for them.
Be my voice and encourage those who are left out, discounted, marginalized, bullied, and put-down.
“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.”-Colossians 3:17
We all long to be seen, heard,…and loved.
