How’s Your Soul? Ten Things Worth Considering…

hows-your-soul

1. People are quick to ask you about your job, your family, school, etc. but how many of us have ever asked someone or been asked “how’s your soul?”
2. “If you’re burning the candle at both ends, you’re not as bright as you think you are.” –Rick Warren
3. “You can have millions in the bank, a Maserati in the driveway and more Instagram followers than the Pope, but unless your soul is healthy, you won’t be happy.”-Judah Smith
4. “ Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”-Proverbs 4:23
5. “It’s far too easy to make life all about the outside me, the external me, the physical me. We fall into the trap that if we can be healthy, wealthy, popular, productive, and influential, then life will be good. So we throw ourselves into the chase, thinking that internal happiness will come from external success. If we just try hard enough, if we just wait long enough, if we just reach the next level, we will feel at peace.”-Judah Smith
6. “We tend to assume that if we lack rest and peace due to the uncertainties of life, then the answer is to be more in control of our fate. If we could just prepare for the future a little better, if we just had a little more money in the bank, if we just had a few more safety nets in place, then our souls would find rest. We equate external control with inner tranquility.

But it doesn’t work that way. No matter how hard we study or work, no matter how early we wake up or how late we go to bed, ultimately time and chance happen to us all.

We can’t guarantee anything. But God can. And only God can.”-Judah Smith
7. “Being anchored in the goodness of God isn’t always going to be a rational thing. It’s a stubborn, unrelenting determination not to let the hardships of life downsize the bigness of God.”-Kevin Gerald
8. “Rather than asking ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ we should ask a far more important question: ‘What do you want your life to look like?’ Or maybe, ‘What kind of soul do you want to have?’
These are better questions; they are deeper questions. They are far more meaningful than asking what someone wants to do professionally or how much money he or she wants to have in the bank, because careers and cash are the stuff of life.

This kind of question sparks an honest evaluation of how effective our lives are. Not effective in the sense of racking up monumental accomplishments or public acclaim, but in the sense of something simpler but less measurable: that of living lives worth living.”-Judah Smith
9. “As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.”-Proverbs 27:19
10. “God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on… God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.”-C.S. Lewis

How’s Your Soul?

How’s your soul? How is your internal state when the crazy and chaotic occurs around you?
Let’s be honest, life in the 21st century is far from perfect.
We dream and face disappointments.
We believe for greater things and face daily brokenness.
We strive for security and stability yet the very things that most look to (careers, economy, [social] media, opinions of others) leave us feeling dejected, rejected, and more confused than ever.

How can our souls remain at peace even when the world around us is less than peaceful?

How's Your Soul

"How's Your Soul?" Back

“How’s Your Soul?” is written by one of my favourite speakers/teachers/communicators/souls on this planet: Judah Smith.  The first time I ever saw Judah Smith, I didn’t quite know what to expect. But the minute he opened his mouth, I was immediately a fan. He is hilarious yet humble, insightful without being arrogant, and someone who loves God, loves people, and loves life. In his newest book, Judah explores the topic of our souls and what makes them so important in this journey called life. Packed with stories from his own life as well as stories from the Bible, “How’s Your Soul?” will have you laughing out loud (pp 100-101 is a MUST read). It will also have you thinking deeper about the things that truly matter in between breaths.

In this book, you will learn that peace amidst the chaotic is possible, rest in a restless world is possible, and having a healthy soul regardless of our external circumstances is possible.

Life on earth wasn’t meant for us to merely get by or go through but to live well and grow through.

So(ul) in Love.

Judah Smith is the lead pastor of the City Church in Seattle, Washington. He is the husband of Chelsea and father of Zion, Elliot, and Grace. He is a highly sought after speaker, best-selling author, and the Seattle Seahawks biggest fan.
