Driving Lessons: Red light, Green light

Inspiration is truly everywhere. Insight often comes when we least expect it.

Yesterday as I was driving, I began to think about the importance of traffic lights.

Most of us have all had one of those days in which we seem to get every red light.

Most of us have also had one of those days in which we seem to get every green light.

The difference, a matter of minutes.

Consider for a moment that on the day that we may be experiencing consecutive red lights, someone else may be experiencing consecutive green lights. Likewise on the day that we are experiencing consecutive green lights, someone else may be experiencing consecutive red lights.

Why is this important?

More often than not, when we experience red lights, we are in a rush and the red lights only add to the anxiety and/or frustration we feel.

Conversely, when we experience green lights, we take it for granted and/or feel like ‘everything’ is going our way.

How often do you let the colour of the light dictate your attitude throughout the day?

Consider what would happen if everyone, everywhere experienced green lights. I’m pretty sure this would lead to mayhem, chaos, and accidents of all sorts.

The reality is, traffic lights are necessary to establish order and flow.

In our lives, there may be days when we feel we are facing red light after red light (things not going “our way”). The reality is, it’s only temporary. Red lights teach us patience, perseverance, and awareness. Green lights challenge us to be grateful, aware, and compassionate towards others especially those experiencing red lights.

So the next time you find yourself getting red light anxiety, take a deep breath and know that somewhere out there someone is experiencing green lights. Your turn will come.
